Charles Powell (Madrid, 1960) is graduate and doctor in History by the University of Oxford.
He was History lecturer in Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford, J. A. Pye Fellow
in University College; and Research Fellow in St. Antony´s College, institution where he
coordinated the studies of contemporary Spain under the direction of Sir Raymond Carr.
After settling in Spain in 1997, he was named deputy director of the program for Estudios
Europeos del Instituto Universitario de Ortega y Gasset (European Studies from the University Institute Ortega y Gasset), and later deputy director of the Centro Español de Relaciones Internacionales (CERI) (Spanish Centre of International Relations). Since 2002, he has held many positions at the Real Instituto Elcano for International and Strategic Studies, where he is currently Director. He is also, since 2002, Senior Lecturer of Contemporary History of Spain in the University CEU San Pablo.
Throughout his academic life, he has been dedicated mainly to the study of Spanish
contemporary political history, both in its internal and external aspects. Amongst his numerous publications the following books stand out: "El piloto del cambio. El rey, la monarquía y la
transición a la democracia" (Planeta, 1991), winner of the award Premio Espejo de España
in 1991. "Juan Carlos of Spain, self-made monarch" (Palgrave/Macmillan, 1995), "España
en Democracia, 1975-2000" (Plaza & Janes, 2001), winner of the award Asi Fue in 2001.
And "Adolfo Suárez. El Presidente que se hizo a sí mismo" (Ediciones B, 2004). Recently he was co-editor of "Del autoritarismo a la democracia. Estudios de política exterior española" (Sílex, 2007).
In the course of his academic duty, Charles Powell has delivered conferences about
contemporary Spain in more than twenty countries.
